Evaluate

5–6  The student evaluates the success of the
product/solution in an objective manner based on the
results of testing, and the views of the intended
users. The student provides an evaluation of his or
her own performance at each stage of the design
cycle and suggests improvements. The student
provides an appropriate evaluation of the impact of
the product/solution on life, society and/or the
environment

This unit we worked on creating House Music. Doing house music was probably one of the most fun units this semester, because I love music, and I love House music in particular, so I was doing something I liked to do. I did not have to research or investigate that much, because I already had a bunch of music which I could play around with, but the main site I did use, to get new music and sounds, was Sound Cloud. Sound Cloud was a really useful source because there was different kinds of music which you can use. The most time in the unit was used to create the house music, rather than working on the different Criterias.

First we worked on Investigate. For that part Mr. Chettri came and talked to us about composition, using different movements and etc, which was helpful for the composition part of the assignment. After that for Investigate, I just looked up different types of music, rather than how to make house music. The Investigate part of the project was short, and in my opinion not really needed (apart from the composition talk).

We worked on the Plan later, which was orgainizing the timeline, when to do what. For me, even if I make plans, I never follow them, so I really didn't need to make my plan so detailed, because it wasn't going to be of any use anyways. Even though my plan not so detailed, it still told  you what to do and when to do it by, which was good enough.

The creation aspect of the project was the toughest, because it was tough finding music that would suit each other. It took many classes just to find certain songs, and movements. Originally I made a couple different mash ups, and house music (attempts), to see which one would work the best. For the other two music that I made, which I discarded, I used only one artist's songs, because I thought that the music would fit well with each other, like Stromae's songs, but in the end it didn't sound so good, and I decided not to do it. To create my music, I used Audacity. Audacity was a really good program, with a lot of good effects, and it was really helpful. One of the things that it didn't have, and what I wanted was different sounds that I could fit into my piece, but Audacity didn't have that. Audacity was really helpful for cropping music, extending it, modifying it and doing transitions. Doing the transitions was the hardest thing by far, because you had to make sure that when one song switches to the next, it sounds smooth and not awkward. Most of my transitions were really bad, in my opinion, it was weird and sounded really off. During most of the time that I was creating my piece, I didn't really focus on finding movements, and a linking song, it was basically just a mash up of many songs, which was not what I was supposed to do. Instead of finding songs in the very beginning, I started with 2 songs, and worked on those, worked on the transitions and cutting off the piece, and after I was happy with the way those 2 pieces were, then I kept adding more. In the end, it was just a mash up of 4-6 songs. In the very end, I realized I HAD to do the linking song, so I just added the linking song in between all the pieces, which to me sounds really weird now. I liked it before when it was just a mash up.

One thing that didn't work in the pieces, in my opinion, was the transitions. I think my transitions were really off, and when people told me they were fine, I was confused. Transitions was my main focus throughout my creation, and I worked on them more than my pieces, and even after I was done, the transitions sounded horrible to me. Maybe that was because the pieces didn't fit in well with each other. I had different types of music, from Indian sounding music, to German music, to pop songs, to other house music, so maybe because the music was so different from each other, the transitions don't sound too good. Another thing I didn't like was one of the songs (We found love - Rihanna), I just put it there because it was the extension of the house music, which got cut off. I wouldn't have used that song, but somehow it fit in there, so I just put it in.

One thing I liked about the documentary was my choice of music (except one song). I think the parts that I cut off from the pieces was the most exciting parts of the song. Like Amnesia and Levels in Reverse, I took the most exciting parts and started of with those. I liked my into song, which was The End, by Tommy Trash. It gave an Indian effect to it, which was good/

All in all, doing this unit was really fun, because we mostly focused on Create, and we could experiment a lot , and I got to work with one of the types of music that I really like. It was fun, and frustrating at the same time (TRANSITIONS!). Overall my product, was not that great, according to me, there were some really nice bits that I did like in the songs, but I think overall it just sounds weird and doesn't fit in together. Next time I need to make sure that the music I choose fits in together. I think next time I should also focus more on finding linking songs, and movements before just throwing stuff together -.-

plan and justifies any modifications made,
resulting in a product/solution of appropriate quality
using the resources available.

WHAT DID I DO TODAY, WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?

23-04-12

I established my timeline today :) :)
Till next class I will be looking at websites, and working on my Investigation Criteria :D

25-04-12

I looked at music, updated bibliography, played with audacity, looked at websites.

27-04-12

I collected bibliography, listened to different artists

14-05-12

Worked on transition from one music to the other

18-05-12

Discussed Evaluate Questions,  worked on the house music, added a song to the music, worked on the transition of that song'

21-05-12

Worked on transitions, and added pieces

30-05-12

Completed piece with movements and linking song

In this project, I spread out my work throughout the time we were given, which was really good, because before I used to do it all in a rush. I worked on different aspects everyday so that I wouldn't have to do it all n the last moment. To create my house music, I used the program “ Audacity”. I think this program was really good to use. At first it was tough finding out how to do things, but once I got the hang of how to use the program, it was really easy for me to use. Audacity does have its cons, like you don't get weird sounds on them which you can put into your music, instead you would have to download them, but all in all, I liked Audacity.

Investigate

5–6  The student explains the problem, discussing its
relevance. The student critically investigates the
problem, evaluating information from a broad range
of appropriate, acknowledged sources. The
student describes detailed methods for appropriate
testing to evaluate the product/solution against the
design specification.

During the Investigation part of the project, Mr. Chettri came in and talked to us about musical composition, and using choruses, and verses and etc. This was helpful for the structure of my house music. Other than that I didn't really have to research much. Most of the music I used, I already had on my laptop. For some other music, I used Sound Cloud. Sound Cloud was a really good website for me, because there's SO MUCH music that I can use, and some of it is really good.

Music I use:
Linking Song: The End : Tommy Trash
1. Monster Mash: Skrillex (Sound Cloud)
2. Amnesia: Hardwell & Ian Carey (Sound Cloud)
2. We found love: Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris
3. Levels in Reverse: Avicii
4. Disco Pogo: Die Atzen

Step Four
Task: Complete Project                                                            Date due:June 4
Process:

This plan wasn't really helpful, because I didn't really pay much attention to it. I forgot about 4 movements and linking songs towards the end, but it wasn't too hard to fit that in, in the end. My plan wasn't detailed, because the creating part took up a whole month and a bit more, and during creation, I was experimenting a lot, so I was all over the place, doing different transitions and etc.

Evaluation

Doing this documentary had a lot of good points and bad points for me. The good parts were that I was actually doing something that I was interested in, so collecting information and videos was not that boring. While researching and looking for videos I found a lot of interesting footage, learned more about the music of the boy bands and the boy bands itself.

My design changed once. I had an original design, which I didn't really follow that much, and then I changed a lot of my documentary, therefore I had to change my design as well. I think that it was better than I changed it, because the original one was hard to follow especially that we couldnt shoot in school, so I pretty much HAD to change my design.

My plan was pretty accurate, and was very organized. Despite that it was hard to follow because I became lazy and did things randomly. I didn't really follow the plan even though I had one. I was shooting when I was editing, and collecting videos when I was arranging the documentary. So I was all over the place. I think thats something I can improve on. If I had followed my plan thoroughly I'm sure I would have done a lot better, and I wouldn't have rushed through it in the end.

My documentary was not half as bad as I thought it would be. I think my documentary does not really teach anything, its just something informative and a documentary that people would watch just for fun. In the beginning I was really unsure on how I would actually start doing a documentary, because the ones I saw seemed so complicated, and I had never made a proper movie before, I just made like presentations. I think the easiest part was collecting the information and the videos. It got harder when I had to film people, because the school didn't allow the students to film inside of school which is really weird. So instead I had to go hunting for people, and I had to talk to people I didn't know. I couldn't interview teachers, which was sad. A option was to Skype them and video tape them, but I didn't feel like doing that. Perhaps if I did add that, my documentary may have become better. But I'm glad that I did get some people to interview, thanks to my friend in Shoba. I didn't get any girls in Shoba, which was really sad, because I'm mainly focusing on girls, but its okay. I got footage from youtube, with celebrities giving their opinion on which boy band they like, which was VERY helpful.

There was a HUGE fail in my documentary and that was that in a lot of my archival footage ( the ones i got from you tube) the voice and the video didn't match. It worked alone, but after I edited the videos the video sound stopped matching. I think this kinda ruined my documentary because I can't stand it when the voice and sound goes off, so I doubt that others can. If it did match my documentary would be a lot more watchable. This was also what the people who saw my documentary said, they didnt like the fact that the voice was out of place.

I think that a good part of my documentary was the music and the way I put my documentary in order. Like what was in it. I put things about the boy bands, the fans, and what the fans had to say as well. The music I used was mainly instrumentals, because I didn't want the wording to confuse some people, and my music didnt really have that much to do with the documentary it was just like background music. My music was catchy though, and I used it to emphasize some of the topics. LIke in the beginning when the music starts it starts like normal and then when my main topic (boy band) comes up the music booms up, which I think kind of emphasized the topic. Even when I was introducing the Teenage Girls, I used the same thing.

The software that I used also made my documentary look much better. I used windows maker, but it was different compared to the normal ones. It had a lot of cool effects and animations that I used to make my documentary look much cooler than the normal ones. It was very easy to use as well and didn't get stuck as often as the normals movie maker that I used to use before.

CREATE:

Discuss the tools available and used. What did you do to develop your skills with these tools?

To create my product I used Windows live movie maker (newer version). This program was really useful because it was easy to understand and use. A lot of the features were really cool and made my documentary look cool. I have used this tool before, therefore it was easier for me, and I had already played around with it,so I knew how to use it.
Evaluate & reflect on your plan.
Describe modifications have you made as you proceeded.Evaluate & reflect on your plan. Describe modifications have you made as you proceeded.
Along the way I made a lot of changes, I wasn't that accurate with my timings, so I had to do a lot in a little time, but I finished my documentary ahead of time. My filming and editing of the documentary was happening side by side which was not that good, but I managed. I didnt change my plan though, because my plan helped me most of the way and was pretty good. It helped me manage my time and what i needed to do (to the most part, then i forgot about it)

The plan helped me to know what I still had to do, and what I had already completed. The plan was pretty straightforward so it was useful

Evaluate Design: I think my design is pretty detailed as to what I am going to do in my final product. My design includes the amount of time needed for a particular area/topic that I am going to cover. My design states what I am going to do throughout the documentary, what is going to take place, what every minute is going to be about, so I am pretty satisfied with my design.

I chose design 2 because I took more time to complete it, and it was much more thorough and included more details. It covered more areas as wel

INVESTIGATION

Identify the problem?

Making a documentary on Boy bands and their relation with Teenage girls

Research Questions:

1. Why does a lot of people like the music of boy bands?
2. How does teenage fans (girls) help in the success of boy bands?
3. Is there a downside to obsession (teen girls obsession) of boy bands?

Goal: To show people that the music of the boy bands is good. To show people the bad side of being a obsessed fan, and tell people about boy bands generally and their relations with their fans

Audience: M1-D2
